CAUL has made a submission to the 2025 Copyright Amendment Inquiry regarding introduction of an Australian orphan works scheme.
CAUL supports the principle-based approach to an exception for orphan works that protect rights of creators where they are known or emerge in support of education and research for national development. These changes will enable universities to increase access to materials and enhance productivity in publicly funded research.
CAUL also supports the amendments to remote learning proposed in the bill, noting the benefits it will deliver to remote learning contexts particularly outside of urban areas.
