Open Educational Resources Collective Pilot Project

2021-2023

This project established and tested a collaborative enterprise to support publishing open educational resources (OER) across CAUL Member institutions. The OER Collective pilot addressed the need for better infrastructure to support the creation and sharing of OERs in Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand universities.

Over the two-year duration of the pilot project, the project team and the groups that succeeded it:

  • developed and implemented a collaborative model for OER publishing
  • created governance and management frameworks for shared resource creation
  • established editorial processes for quality assurance
  • developed and implemented a grants program
  • supported the publication of several open textbooks, including through cross-institutional collaboration.

The pilot provided participating institutions with:

  • infrastructure to publish via a shared publishing platform
  • support resources and guidance materials
  • opportunities to collaborate on OER development
  • opportunities for authors to obtain grants
  • community and peer support
  • low-risk entry into open educational publishing.

The project team leveraged the collective expertise of CAUL Member institutions to develop and implement the OER Collective model. The pilot demonstrated how collaborative approaches to OER development could help institutions overcome common barriers to entry in open publishing while building capacity across the sector through shared expertise and resources.

The OER Collective transitioned to an ongoing service at the beginning of 2024. Learn more about the OER Collective service.

The pilot project was an initiative of the Enabling a Modern Curriculum Program.
