CAUL’s Professional Learning Service supports staff development across university libraries in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Building on a longstanding commitment to professional development, the service provides targeted, contextualised learning opportunities in areas of strategic need identified by CAUL Members. These opportunities are designed to equip staff with the skills and knowledge needed to ensure a future-fit library workforce and to cultivate a strong pipeline of current and emerging leaders. Learning is delivered through webinars, workshops, communities of practice and other sector-led initiatives.
Leadership development
As a peak leadership body, cultivating a pipeline of dynamic leaders is a key priority for CAUL’s Professional Learning Service.
CAUDIT Leadership Institute
Each year, CAUL partners with CAUDIT to offer library staff a place at the CAUDIT Leadership Institute (the CLI) — a leading development program for future leaders in higher education. The CLI brings professionals from library, IT and research domains together to explore leadership in complex and rapidly evolving environments. The immersive, cohort-based format focuses on strategic thinking, authentic leadership and driving change across the sector.
Participation in the CLI allows library professionals to learn alongside peers from across the digital ecosystem. It builds cross-sector understanding, strengthens leadership capability, and fosters long-term professional networks, supporting the development of confident, adaptive leaders for the university libraries of tomorrow.

Communities of practice
CAUL provides communities of practice to support Members and their staff in professional learning and knowledge sharing related to key topics.
A community of practice is a ‘group of people who share a common concern, a set of problems, or interest in a topic and who come together to fulfil both individual and group goals’. It is a learning community that convenes via an email list and meets regularly to discuss topics of interest to members.
